Traditional summer festival with grilled fish, live music, and club life in the 'Saddle City' of the Vorderpfalz
The Schifferstadt Fishermen's Festival is a firm fixture in the town's event calendar and one of the classic summer festivals of the Vorderpfalz. It continues the long tradition of Palatinate folk and club festivals, which take place somewhere in the region every weekend between May and October, fostering community spirit among neighbors, clubs, and visitors.
As the name suggests, fish is at the heart of the Fishermen's Festival: fresh trout, salmon, fried herring, or 'Backfisch' (fried fish) are grilled and fried on-site. These are served with Palatinate white and rosé wines from the nearby growing regions of the Vorderpfalz, well-chilled beer, and soft drinks. Classic Palatinate specialties such as 'Saumagen' (pig's stomach stuffed with meat and bread), 'Leberknödel' (liver dumplings), or 'Bratwurst' (fried sausage) are also part of the culinary offerings. Schifferstadt is regionally known for its asparagus cultivation – however, the festival takes place after the asparagus season, so summer dishes and salads complement the menu.
The festival is accompanied by live music from local bands, often featuring a mix of Schlager (popular German music), cover songs, and Palatinate dialect. The stage and catering stands are run by Schifferstadt clubs, who use the proceeds to fund their youth work and club activities. Thus, the Fishermen's Festival also serves as an important solidarity event for the club scene of the 'Saddle City'.
Schifferstadt is strategically located between Speyer, Ludwigshafen, and Mannheim, and with over 21,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town in the Rhein-Pfalz district. The name refers to the town's medieval importance as a settlement for boatmen ('Schiffer') and fishermen ('Fischer') on the Rehbach, an old arm of the Rhine. This maritime tradition lives on not only in the town's coat of arms featuring a ship but also in festivals like the Fishermen's Festival, which combine the 'Saddle City's' historical identity with modern conviviality.
The 2026 Fishermen's Festival remains true to its summer tradition, bringing together the people of Schifferstadt for an evening full of culinary delights and conviviality. From late afternoon, the stalls will open with fish specialties, Palatinate wines, and Palatinate specialties. Live music will provide the atmosphere, while clubs and the town marketing department ensure smooth operation. In summer temperatures, the Fishermen's Festival becomes a typical Palatinate weekend experience in the heart of the Rhein-Pfalz district.
