Traditional citizens' shooting festival in Harpstedt with over 500 years of history
The Harpstedt Citizens' Marksmen of 1509 are among the oldest shooting associations in Lower Saxony. Their roots reach deep into the early modern period when the citizens of the municipality had the right and duty to defend their homeland together. Over centuries, this spirit of defense evolved into a vibrant tradition, celebrated every year under the Low German name Schiebenscheeten. The festival combines history, community, and conviviality in a way that is recognized throughout the Oldenburg region.
The citizens' shooting festival spans several days around Pentecost. Traditionally, it begins with the children's shooting festival on Whit Monday, where the younger generation can compete for their king and queen. On the actual shooting festival Tuesday, the drummers wake the town early in the morning, before the ceremonial battalion roll call brings together the marksmen, officers, and guild flags for a parade. This is followed by the bird shooting competition, the proclamation of the new shooting king, a grand parade through the streets of Harpstedt, and numerous social highlights in the festival tent.
The Schiebenscheeten is far more than a historical relic: the citizens' marksmen are carefully evolving the festival and integrating new formats to appeal to younger generations. Bull-riding competitions, dart tournaments for young people, and attractive family activities complement the classic program points. This successfully bridges the gap between preserving centuries-old rites and a contemporary festival culture that includes all age groups.
For Harpstedt's approximately 5,000 inhabitants, the Schiebenscheeten is the defining major event of the year. Shops decorate their windows, residents adorn their houses with birch branches, and many former Harpstedt residents return to their hometown for the festival days. Guests from the neighboring municipalities of Dötlingen, Wildeshausen, Großenkneten, and Wardenburg also flock to experience the unique atmosphere of a Northern German citizens' shooting festival.
Entry to the festival grounds around the market square and shooting grounds is free. Admission or reservation fees may apply for individual events in the festival tent, especially for the dance evenings. Harpstedt is conveniently located between Bremen and Oldenburg on the B 213; both cities are about half an hour away by car. Temporary road closures will be in effect around the market square during the festival days – pay attention to the signage.
The 2026 program starts on Whit Monday, May 25, with the children's shooting festival from 1:30 PM. Young marksmen will determine their king and queen in age-appropriate disciplines, while a bull-riding activity for children aged ten and over and a dart tournament for young people between 13 and 20 years old will round off the program.
On Tuesday, May 26, the actual citizens' shooting festival begins with drummers from 6 AM and the ceremonial battalion roll call at 10:45 AM. This is followed by the king shooting competition, the proclamation, and the festive parade. Dance evenings, morning pint gatherings, and family events will continue until May 30.
Detailed times for individual program points will be published on the official website of the Harpstedt Citizens' Marksmen.
