Tradition for Walpurgis Night in the Pirmasens district
The raising of the Maypole on the eve of May 1st is one of the oldest and most enduring folk traditions in central and southern Germany. In Pirmasens-Gersbach, the custom is organized and celebrated annually by the Gersbach associations. The Maibaumfest is a cross-generational event that brings together the residents of the district.
The festival begins at 6:30 PM in the Gersbach multi-purpose hall. At 7:00 PM, the central moment follows: the raising of the Maypole. The decorated tree—usually a slender fir or birch with colorful ribbons and decorations—is erected through community effort, traditionally with the participation of the young men of the district. The raising is a physical act that makes the community visible and instills pride in one's own village.
After the raising, the social part of the evening begins. The Gersbach associations provide food and drinks, and music accompanies the festival. In some years, bands play; in others, it's a classic celebration in the hall. Families from the district, association members, and guests from surrounding districts gather for a relaxed evening.
The Gersbach associations form a strong and committed community. The Maibaumfest is just one part of a rich annual program that also includes the village festival, the Easter market by the Landfrauen, and other events. The Gersbach multi-purpose hall is the center of this association life.
The 2026 edition continues the proven format: reception at the multi-purpose hall, joint raising of the Maypole, and a social gathering afterwards. The Gersbach associations, through their organization, guarantee a smooth process.
The exact program for 2026, including musical accompaniment and culinary offerings, will be announced by the associations in advance.
Detailed information will be communicated through the Gersbach associations and their channels.
