Traditional Palatinate Kirchweih (church consecration festival) on the Schulplatz in the Schauernheim district with Kerwebaum (festival maypole) and Kerweprinzessin (festival princess)
The Schauernheimer Kerwe is the central folk festival of the Schauernheim district and complements the more contemplative Brunnenfest of the Dannstadt district in the festival calendar of the twin municipality Dannstadt-Schauernheim. While the Brunnenfest focuses on contemplation, the Schauernheimer Kerwe is a loud, exuberant folk festival with a stage, festival tent, and extended festival evenings.
The venue is the Schulplatz on Schulstraße in the Schauernheim district. The central square offers enough space for a stage, festival tent, and catering stands from local clubs. During the festival weekend, the square and parts of Schulstraße will be closed to traffic to make space for festival visitors.
The Kerwe begins on Friday evening from 7 PM with a DJ warmup. Young people and festival friends from neighboring towns gather to celebrate the start of the Kerwe. The first sausages and Palatinate wines are served, and the mood rises as the evening progresses.
Saturday is the highlight of the Schauernheimer Kerwe. At 1:45 PM, the Kerweprinzessin is presented – a young woman from Schauernheim who traditionally represents the Kerwe and takes on special duties during the festival weekend. At 3:00 PM, the erection of the Kerwebaum follows, a central ritual of every Palatinate Kerwe: a tall, decorated tree is erected on the Schulplatz and symbolizes the official start of the festival. The erection is often accompanied by live music and a humorous speech by the Kerweborscht (festival organizers).
Sunday starts with Frühschoppen and a festival service and offers a family program in the afternoon. Monday (classic Kerwe day) concludes the festival with dancing, live music, and the traditional Kerwebegraben (symbolic burial of the 'Kerwe' as a conclusion).
The Schauernheimer Kerwe is part of the centuries-old tradition of Palatinate Kirchweih festivals. Originally, the Kerwe was the anniversary of the consecration of the village church, celebrated with a church service, feast, and dancing. This religious origin evolved into today's folk festival, which still maintains a connection to its religious roots through the festival service on Sunday.
The 2026 edition continues the Schauernheimer Kerwe tradition. With a festival tent, Kerwebaum, Kerweprinzessin, and all the typical rituals of Palatinate Kerwe culture, the festival offers a complete folk festival experience on a small scale in a small Vorderpfalz (Lower Palatinate) municipality. Club members, Kerweborscht, and the local population jointly create a festival weekend that highlights Schauernheim's identity.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
