The Legend Festival of the "Sabinchen City" on the second weekend of June
The ballad of "Sabinchen was a lady" was first published in a songbook in 1849. It tells the story of a maid from Treuenbrietzen who falls in love with the wrong shoemaker – a theme that has since become part of the identity of the small town in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district. Treuenbrietzen proudly bears the epithet "Sabinchen City," and the Sabinchenfest is the central celebration of this identity.
The first Sabinchenfest was celebrated in 1995. Today, it is organized by the Sabinchenverein Treuenbrietzen e.V. – now with a younger generation at the helm, but with the same passionate commitment. The 30th Sabinchenfest took place in 2025; the 31st edition will follow in 2026 on the second weekend of June.
The event kicks off with the Löffelbaum-Weihe (Spoon Tree consecration), an old traditional ceremony around the Löffelbaum, the festival's emblem. This is followed by the election of the new Sabinchen couple – a young couple from Treuenbrietzen will become ambassadors for the town for one year. The highlight on Saturday evening is the baroque fireworks display that illuminates Großstraße. On Sunday, the Sabinchen Run starts, followed by the grand festival parade through the city center.
Großstraße transforms into a festival mile with market stalls, food vendors, and several stages. Concerts, traditional costume performances, and a dedicated Children's Day with games, face painting, and shows attract families from all over the Fläming region. Sabinchen figures made of ceramic, created 40 years ago by sculptor Lothar Sell, line the festival mile.
Treuenbrietzen is located in the Hoher Fläming, a hilly landscape in the south of the state of Brandenburg. The region is known for its castles, tranquil forests, and a well-developed network of hiking trails. The Sabinchenfest is not just a date on the town's calendar but an expression of regional identity, fueled by oral storytelling, folk songs, and cherished folk culture.
The Sabinchenfest 2026 is currently on the calendar without official program confirmation. The usual structure is expected: opening on Friday evening with the Löffelbaum-Weihe, on Saturday the election of the new Sabinchen couple, market activities on Großstraße, and in the evening the traditional baroque fireworks. On Sunday, the Sabinchen Run, festival parade through the city center, and concerts on the stages.
The exact date is usually confirmed by the Sabinchenverein in spring; the precise program follows a few weeks before the festival.
Exact program for 2026 not yet published. Usual structure: Löffelbaum-Weihe, Sabinchen couple election, baroque fireworks (Saturday evening), Sabinchen Run, festival parade (Sunday), concerts, market activities on Großstraße, Children's Day.
