Open-air newcomer festival at the Völklingen Ironworks UNESCO World Heritage Site
Saarklang is unique in Saarland: an entire festival organized from A to Z by students of the Bachelor's program in Music Management at Saarland University. Booking, logistics, sponsor acquisition, stage technology, stage management – everything is handled by students. The supporting association is PopRat Saarland, an interest group for the Saarland pop music scene. The idea: newcomer artists should be given a professional stage – and students learn directly from a real festival.
For years, the venue has been the Völklinger Hütte UNESCO World Heritage Site. The industrial monument – recognized in 1994 as the first industrial complex worldwide – is completely closed to regular visitors on festival days. Instead, the courtyards between the blast furnaces and the sintering plant are transformed into festival stages with light installations and an open-air living room atmosphere.
The program consistently focuses on newcomer acts: regional bands from Saarland spanning pop, rap, soul, and indie genres, emerging German acts with their first record deals, and French talents from Grand Est. Every year, a "Female Open Call" gives a young female artist the opportunity to perform on the main stage – in 2025, "Lynne" won the competition and opened the main evening.
Several weeks before the main festival, the team organizes "Insel-Konzerte" (Island Concert Series) in Saarland towns – in 2025, for example, in Merzig (May 10) and Saarlouis (May 24). These preview concerts offer smaller acts additional stages and build anticipation for the main festival.
Free admission is intentional: Saarklang sees itself as a democratic festival that makes pop culture accessible to everyone. The event is financed by sponsors, grants from the Saarland state, the city of Völklingen, the university, and the Sparkasse. Visitors can voluntarily donate or purchase merchandise.
The 2026 edition falls on a weekday (Wednesday) – a deliberate choice, as the ironworks are closed to regular visitors on June 3 anyway. The team of music management students will release the lineup gradually in spring 2026.
The 2026 lineup will be released gradually on saarklang.com and @saarklang_festival on Instagram. Expected:
