Advent market at Buttermarkt with illuminated Christmas tree above the Leukbach
Saarburg is famous for its waterfall, which flows right through the old town—a rare urban planning configuration in Germany. In Advent, the waterfall becomes the main stage: the illuminated Christmas tree hangs above the Leukbach, bathing the water, the old half-timbered houses, and the slopes leading to Saarburg Castle in warm light. The Buttermarkt, directly by the waterfall, forms the center of the Christmas market.
In 2026, the market will run on two weekends: 2nd Advent (December 5–7) and 3rd Advent (December 12–14). This division is a Saarburg peculiarity that suits the compact market area: two intensive weekends with full stall occupancy instead of a continuous multi-week format. The concept has proven successful and makes the market a concentrated Advent experience.
The stalls offer regional specialties from the Saargau region: mulled wine and punch, homemade honey and cookies, Moselle wine and sparkling wine, cheese from the Hunsrück, game from the region's forests. The craft offerings range from ceramics and woodwork to textiles and jewelry—all from workshops in the region. This gives the market a clear regional focus instead of interchangeable mass-produced goods.
The stage features a program of concerts—choirs, brass ensembles, folk music—and visits from St. Nicholas for the children. Craft activities, a children's train, and a carousel complement the family offerings. The combination of the waterfall, castle, half-timbered backdrop, and illuminated Christmas tree makes the Christmas market one of the most photogenic Advent destinations in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The 2026 program continues the proven two-weekend structure. Both weekends will have their own stage program with concerts and family activities.
The detailed program overview (performances, craft activities, St. Nicholas dates) will be published on the market's official website.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
