Spring wine hike between Mertesdorf and Kasel with tasting stations on the Ruwer on May 24, 2026
The Ruwertaler Frühling is one of the fixed events in the annual calendar of the Verein Ruwer-Riesling e.V. and marks the official start of the wine open-air season in the Ruwertal valley. On May 24, 2026, participating vintners will open tasting stations along a hiking route between the wine villages of Mertesdorf and Kasel.
The route is signposted and leads through the steep slopes of the Ruwer – small but qualitatively outstanding Riesling sites on Devonian slate, known for their minerality and longevity. Between the stations, visitors hike through vineyards freshly greened in May and can experience the Ruwertal landscape and its cultural history along the paths. The hike can be walked in both directions, and there is no fixed starting point.
At the tasting stations, the participating vintners will serve their current vintages – focus: Ruwertaler Riesling in dry, off-dry, and noble sweet styles. Small snacks will also be available at individual stations. Direct exchange with the vintners, a relaxed atmosphere, and the unique landscape make the event a characteristic spring event of the region.
The family wineries from Mertesdorf and Kasel offer a distinct profile within the Ruwer region. Mertesdorf, home to the renowned wineries Maximin Grünhaus and Karlsmühle, as well as Kasel with its classic sites Nies'chen and Kehrnagel, represent the valley's diversity. Sturdy footwear, sun protection, and sufficient drinking water are recommended.
The 2026 edition falls on Pentecost Sunday, making it part of an extended wine weekend on the Ruwer. Early arrival is recommended.
In case of heavy rain, individual stations may be relocated or shortened.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
