Art in the Historic Quarter

Since 2000, the Rostock Art Night has been a firm cultural highlight of the Hanseatic and University City. Organized by the citizens' initiative Östliche Altstadt, it transforms the quarter of the same name into an open art trail: galleries, artists' studios, churches such as St. Petri and St. Nikolai, shops, and gastronomic establishments open their doors and present a diverse program.

Program and Atmosphere

Visitors can experience painting, sculpture, photography, installations, live music, and performances at around 40 venues. The opening traditionally coincides with the St. Nikolai Art Market. Those who don't manage to see everything in one night can continue the program the following weekend in daylight – the Art Night extends over several days.

Local Context

The Östliche Altstadt is Rostock's oldest preserved residential quarter and shapes the historic cityscape in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The narrow streets and Wilhelminian-era houses form an impressive backdrop for an art festival that consciously focuses on a compact, easily walkable district.
