Multi-week summer festival in Rommersdorf Abbey with comedy, cabaret, concerts, a cappella, and family theatre
Founded in 1117 and an important Premonstratensian abbey on the Middle Rhine until secularisation in 1803, Rommersdorf Abbey is now one of the best-preserved medieval monastery ensembles in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. The church, cloister, convent building, and the English Garden form the setting for the Rommersdorf Festspiele, which have been established for years as one of the most attractive summer theatre and concert festivals in the region.
The festival deliberately avoids a one-sided genre focus. Instead of a "pure" theatre or music festival, it combines very different stage formats: classical and modern spoken theatre, a cappella concerts, singer-songwriter evenings, folk theatre, cabaret, comedy, family theatre, travesty, readings. This breadth appeals to a wide audience of all generations.
The 2026 festival opens on June 19 with the comedy "Liebe alla Woody" by Freie Bühne Neuwied. Over the approximately four weeks, the programme includes Andreas Kümmert (singer-songwriter, June 20), family theatre (June 21–22), Gustav Peter Wähler Band (June 22), Wildes Holz (June 23), choir concert (June 28), MAYBEBOP (June 29–30), Trio "O Sole Mio" (July 3), Thomas Röhmann (July 4), Jürgen Becker with cabaret (July 9), Glinda Glanz & Gina Colada travesty (July 10), LaLeLu a cappella (July 11), and a reading with Bjarne Mädel to conclude (July 12).
Most performances take place in the abbey's English Garden — a special open-air atmosphere with monastery walls as a backdrop. In case of bad weather, performances move to the church or the cloister. Picnic areas, food stalls, and the monastery café complete the festival experience.
For 2026, the festival management has put together a programme ranging from comedy and family theatre to a cappella concerts and readings. Each performance benefits from the extraordinary atmosphere of the monastery ensemble.
