About Burgbelebung Falkenstein

The Burgbelebung (castle reenactment) at Falkenstein Castle ruins transforms the spectacular ruins near Falkenstein in the Donnersberg district into a medieval living world. Performing groups, craftspeople, musicians, and jesters bring the castle walls to life on a late May weekend, offering visitors a true journey back to the High and Late Middle Ages.

In 2026, the Burgbelebung will take place from Friday, May 29th to Sunday, May 31st. A tent city on Friday, combat demonstrations, castle tours, children's archery, a fire show, and medieval music will fill the weekend. The Burgstubb (castle tavern) will be open Friday to Sunday, and market stalls will provide medieval wares.

Falkenstein Castle Ruins

Falkenstein Castle ruins, near the municipality of the same name in the Donnersberg district, are among the most impressive medieval structures in Northern Palatinate. The castle was built in the 12th century and was one of the largest complexes in the region. Today, the ruins with their remaining walls and towers perch on a hill, offering spectacular views over the North Palatinate landscape.

Burgbelebung — Concept

The Burgbelebung follows the concept of "living history": Performing groups slip into historical roles, live for a weekend in medieval attire, set up tents on the castle grounds, and demonstrate medieval crafts, combat techniques, music, and ways of life. This creates an interactive experience for visitors – not just a show, but also an encounter with the performers.

Program Elements

Combat demonstrations showcase the sword and weapon techniques of medieval knights and soldiers. Castle tours explain the architecture and history of the site. At the children's archery, the youngest visitors can try their hand at the bow. The evening fire show dramatically illuminates the castle with torches and fire. Medieval music – usually featuring hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, drums, and shawm – provides the right soundscape.

Burgstubb and Market Stalls

The Burgstubb – the small tavern at the castle – is open Friday to Sunday and offers refreshments in a medieval atmosphere. Market stalls gather vendors of leather goods, jewelry, fur textiles, mead, medieval weapons, clothing, and crafts. Those who wish to immerse themselves deeper into the medieval experience will find equipment and souvenirs here.
