About Roman Life Military

The "Roman Life 2026 — Military" program dedicates the first weekend of September to the Roman legion. Reenactors in historically accurate equipment — Lorica Segmentata, helmet, pilum, scutum, and gladius — present the daily life, training, tactical formations (tortoise, battle order), and armament of Roman legionaries. Trier, as the provincial capital and at times imperial residence, was a central military base in the northwest of the Empire; the demonstrations bring this historical background to life against an original backdrop. Included in the regular admission price of the World Heritage Site.

Augusta Treverorum (Trier) was not only the provincial capital of Belgica Prima in the 3rd and 4th centuries but also, at times, the imperial residence under Constantine the Great. Thus, the city was a military and political heavyweight of the Empire, with large garrisons, an Imperial Guard, and a high-ranking administrative structure. The archaeological traces of this military heritage can be found in the Basilica of Constantine, the city walls, and the surrounding World Heritage Sites.

The demonstrations on the weekend of September 5th/6th, 2026, link this historical significance to reenactment formats. Visitors can see the typical equipment of legionaries, tactical formations, the construction of a temporary marching camp, Roman drill training, and armament demonstrations. Reenactors explain the daily life of legionaries, their pay, hierarchy, and social status in the Empire.
