Roman crafts live at the UNESCO World Heritage Imperial Baths Trier — May weekend
The Imperial Baths of Trier are among the largest Roman bath complexes in the Empire and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Their monumental Caldarium structure, the remains of the ambulatories, and the largely preserved underground corridors offer an unusually vivid backdrop for events on Roman daily life. The event series “Roman Life” by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate uses one World Heritage site each weekend of a month with a thematic focus — in May, the Imperial Baths with the theme of crafts.
The stations in detail: At the loom, textile production is shown; at the bow-making stand, composite bows made of wood, sinew, and horn are created; in the field kitchen, cooking is done according to Roman recipes; in the writing room, visitors write with a stylus on wax tablets; at the wine press, guests can tread grapes and taste the freshly pressed must; the gemstone cutter demonstrates the technique of ancient gem cutters. A horse ground school introduces the handling of ancient riding horses.
The 2026 edition coincides with Trier's 40th World Heritage anniversary. The General Directorate for Cultural Heritage RLP uses the weekend for the official launch of the “Roman Life” series 2026 at the World Heritage sites and combines several thematic stations that will serve as a model for the entire summer.
