Living Antiquity at Alzey Castle with 130 performers, gladiators, and a bird of prey show
The Römerfest Alzey is one of the Volkerstadt's special festival formats – a historical reenactment that picks up on Alzey's ancient past. The venue is the grounds of Alzey Castle, which offers an atmospheric backdrop with its castle walls and spacious courtyard.
Alzey's roots reach deep into Roman times. The town was part of the Roman province of Germania Superior and housed a garrison that secured the nearby Rhine valley. Finds from the Roman era – wall remains, coins, pottery, inscriptions – attest to the intensive Roman presence. With the Römerfest, Alzey builds on this heritage and makes it accessible to a broad audience.
Around 130 performers from Roman historical reenactment groups from all over Germany and neighboring countries are guests. They present daily life, crafts, religion, politics, and the military. Camps are set up, cooking stations are established, workshops are operated, and army exercises are held – an immersive journey into antiquity.
Gladiator Fights: choreographed contests in the style of the Roman arena, with real replicas of ancient weapons and armor. Equestrian Demonstrations: Roman cavalry showcases their riding skills. Weapon Displays: armament and tactics of the Roman legions, from javelins to swords. Bird of Prey Show: falconry in the Roman tradition.
Adults pay 8 Euros, reduced 6 Euros, children aged 7 to 17 pay 4 Euros. Family tickets cost 20 Euros (or 12 Euros depending on the category) and make the visit attractive for entire families. Advance booking via Reservix.
The Römerfest is more than just a spectacle: it is an experience-oriented history format that offers children and young people a sensory access to antiquity. During school holidays and weekends, it is a popular alternative to classic museum visits.
