Largest town festival in the Südwestpfalz district – three days with over three stages commemorating the Rodalben vegetable carriers
The unusual festival name goes back to a real historical figure: the Grünesputsche. This is what the women of Rodalben were called, who daily – on foot over the hills of the Palatinate Forest – carried vegetables from the Rodalben gardens to the market in Pirmasens. "Grünesputsche" is the dialect form of "Grünes-Pott," meaning vegetable basket. These women were part of the supply chain for an entire region; their daily hike of several hours with heavy baskets deserves the respect of an entire town celebration today. Rodalben has created a living monument to their tradition with the Grünesputschefest.
With visitor numbers in the four- to five-figure range, the Grünesputschefest is the largest town festival in the Südwestpfalz district and stands out in supra-regional comparison. The size of the program reflects this: more than three music stages are spread across the town center, and parallel programming allows every visitor to move according to their taste. The gastronomic offer is correspondingly broad, from Palatinate classics to international specialties, sweets, and ice cream.
The kickoff on Friday evening brings the first concerts and quickly fills the town. Saturday and Sunday are then full operation days with all-day programming. Highlights on Saturday evening are the main concerts on the big stages, and on Sunday, the Frühschoppen (morning pint), the family afternoon, and the stage finale in the evening. The showmen provide the classic Volksfest element with rides and games.
Rodalben is located in the Palatinate Forest, in the valley of the Rodalb, nestled between the mountains of the Wasgau. The town, with around 6,500 inhabitants, is small enough to become a complete festival zone during the Grünesputschefest and large enough to provide infrastructure and accommodation for the numerous visitors. The nearby Rodalber Felsenwanderweg (Rock Hiking Trail) is one of the most beautiful circular hiking trails in Germany.
The festival is organized by the town of Rodalben in cooperation with local associations and showmen. The detailed program will be published before the festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: three days of full operation with over three parallel stages.
