Opening Concert RheinVokal 2026 with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and works by Sibelius and Mahler
The RheinVokal Festival is one of the most artistically ambitious summer festivals in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its core identity lies in vocal music in all its facets – from opera to lieder, oratorio, vocal ensembles, and crossover projects with jazz, world music, and performance. The venues are the historic sites of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage site, stretching between Koblenz and Rüdesheim.
The 2026 opening concert is titled "Mythenklänge" and combines works by two composers who could hardly be more different, yet both bring the mythical into their music: Jean Sibelius, the Finnish symphonist whose tone poems evoke Nordic sagas, and Gustav Mahler, the Austrian symphonist whose late symphonies and song cycles explore myth with psychological depth.
The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern performs, the symphony orchestra of Saarländischer Rundfunk and Südwestrundfunk. Based in Saarbrücken with concentrated concert activities in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, the orchestra is one of the distinguished ARD broadcasting ensembles. On the concert stage of the Rhein-Mosel-Halle, it will be one of the highlights of the festival season.
With Dorota Szczepańska (soprano) and Fleur Barron (mezzo-soprano), two of the most promising voices of the younger generation will be on stage. Both are currently active as scholarship holders and soloists at major European festivals. RheinVokal traditionally keeps a watchful eye on emerging talents and consistently integrates them into its programming.
The RheinVokal Festival 2026 runs from June 14 to August 30 and, in addition to Koblenz's Rhein-Mosel-Halle, features other historic venues such as Schloss Engers, Stiftskirche St. Goar, Marienkirche Oberwesel, Brentanohaus Oestrich-Winkel, and Schloss Vollrads. A second concert format of the season is titled "Berliner Requiem" and combines works by Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler. Detailed program and tickets at rheinvokal.de.
