Open-air reggae festival amidst a functional hemp field
In the middle of the small district town of Steinheim, at Lipper Tor 6, the regional industrial hemp product specialist Hanf-Zeit operates a functional industrial hemp field. In midsummer, the hemp grows to about three meters high — and it is precisely then that the field becomes a stage for a unique open-air festival once every summer.
Reggae im Hanffeld has been organized since 2015 by Junge Kultur Steinheim e.V. in cooperation with Hanf-Zeit. The idea: Reggae, Dub, and Ska acts play on a stage set up right at the edge of the hemp field. A hemp maze winds around it, allowing visitors to experience the plant in its full size.
The festival is not just a music event but combines three strands:
The *Neue Westfälische* once described the festival as "a bit of Woodstock in Steinheim" — referring to the relaxed, mixed atmosphere on the green meadow by the hemp field. Visitors come with blankets and folding chairs, many stay the entire afternoon and evening.
Steinheim is located in southeastern North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Kreis Höxter (Ostwestfalen-Lippe). The town is small (around 13,000 inhabitants), but the festival attracts reggae fans from all over the Weserbergland and beyond. Travel via B252 (Paderborn-Höxter axis) or by regional train to Steinheim station (short walk to the festival grounds at Lipper Tor).
The association Junge Kultur Steinheim e.V. organizes cultural formats beyond the mainstream in the small town. Reggae im Hanffeld is its flagship event; in addition, there are concerts, film nights, and discussion formats. The collaboration with Hanf-Zeit (based in Steinheim) guarantees the unique venue.
The first edition took place in 2015. Due to the pandemic, the festival took a four-year break — the 2023 edition marked the restart after a long pause. The 2025 edition took place on July 19th. The continuation of the now annual rhythm is planned for 2026; the organizer will publish the exact date in good time on its website and Facebook page.
The 2026 edition will follow the established concept: Reggae bands will play right at the edge of the three-meter-high hemp field, with the hemp maze and sales/information booths in between. The organizer will confirm the exact date, line-up announcements, and ticket sales start via reggae-im-hanffeld.de and the festival's Facebook page.
Specific line-up and set times will be published in spring/summer 2026.
Tickets are expected to be in the range of €20-€25 (advance purchase cheaper than at the box office). Children under 18 accompanied by adults enter free. Advance sales usually open in spring on the festival website.
By car: B252 towards Paderborn-Höxter, exit Steinheim, then to Lipper Tor 6. Parking is limited. By train: RB84 to Steinheim station, from there about a 10-minute walk.
In 2025, prices were €20 in advance, €25 at the box office. Children under 18 accompanied by adults enter free. Advance sales start in spring 2026 at reggae-im-hanffeld.de.
Come during the day: the hemp maze is most impressive in daylight. Don't forget blankets and sun protection — the field offers no natural shade. Food is available on site (hemp burgers, hemp ice cream, vegetarian and vegan options).
