Light art in the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town of Regensburg
RE.LIGHT is the International Light Art Festival of the city of Regensburg in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Palatinate. It graces the medieval Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2006 – with contemporary light art, thus combining historical architecture with modern media art.
At around 14 locations, national and international light artists present about 15 works: impressive light projections, light installations, and immersive light and video shows on building facades, green spaces, in courtyards, churches, museum spaces, and on bustling squares such as Neupfarrplatz, the Steinerne Brücke, and at the Thon-Dittmer-Palais.
The festival hub is located in Maximilianstraße (M26): Free program flyers are available here, tickets can be booked, and merchandise can be purchased. A specialist conference with light artists and experts complements the festival with artist presentations, panel discussions, and lectures.
RE.LIGHT relies on 100 percent green electricity and energy-efficient LED technology and is part of the sustainability commitment of the International Light Festivals Organisation.
Following its successful premiere in 2024, RE.LIGHT takes place biennially. It has rapidly become a regionally significant cultural event in Regensburg and the entire Upper Palatinate.
The second edition of RE.LIGHT will illuminate Regensburg's World Heritage Old Town with international light art for eleven days from March 12 to 22, 2026. At around 14 locations, visitors can discover 15 works: light projections, light installations, and immersive light and video shows on building facades, in courtyards, churches, museum spaces, and on bustling squares.
It is open daily from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. The majority of the works can be experienced for free in public spaces; a combined ticket is required for the two light shows in the Minoritenkirche and the Velodrom. The festival hub in Maximilianstraße (M26) opens daily from March 12. On Friday, March 13, 2026, a specialist conference with artist presentations, panel discussions, and lectures will take place at Degginger.
Regensburg is an ICE stop on the German railway network and is accessible via the A3/A93 motorways. The Old Town with the installation sites can be explored on foot; many locations are accessible to people with disabilities.
The festival can be experienced daily from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM.
The majority of the artworks in public spaces are free to access. A combined ticket is required for selected light shows in enclosed spaces; tickets are available at the festival hub in Maximilianstraße.
