Traditional Carnival Ball of the Oldest Mainz Guard at Frankfurter Hof
The Mainzer Ranzengarde von 1837 e.V. is the oldest guard of the Mainz Carnival and custodian of an almost 190-year club history. Its annual Altweiberball is one of the most traditional Mainz hall carnival balls and has, over the decades, earned a status as a regular guest event, where the same families, circles of friends, and carnival enthusiasts return year after year — a form of hall carnival culture that has a long tradition in Mainz and constitutes the unique charm of these balls.
The venue is the Frankfurter Hof, a historic event building in Mainz's Old Town, which, with its hall, central location, and characteristic Mainz cultural charm, offers an ideal setting for a hall carnival ball. Unlike the large balls in the Rheingoldhalle or Kurfürstliches Schloss, the Frankfurter Hof has a more intimate hall, which intensifies the atmosphere and concentrates the experience. The dance floor and standing reception are close together, the stage is near the audience, and catering is at the hall's edges — everything that belongs to a classic Mainz hall carnival ball.
The date on Weiberdonnerstag (February 12, 2026) is traditionally the day in Rhineland carnival when women take power and street carnival begins. In Mainz, this day has a slightly different meaning than in the Rhineland carnival region, but it is nevertheless the first major ball evening of the hot final phase of the campaign. Starting at 8:11 PM and with the traditional Mainz Elferzeit (eleven o'clock time) symbolism, the ball begins with the classic session/ball opening, followed by a long night of live music, DJs, and dancing.
Costume requirement is mandatory in the Mainz ball scene and is checked at the entrance. At €33, the ticket price is in the mid-range for Mainz hall carnival balls and reflects the medium-sized hall format. For 2026, the ball is already sold out — an indication of the established regular guest culture and the high loyalty of the Ranzengarde supporters. Those without a ticket can experience the atmosphere around the Frankfurter Hof in Mainz's Old Town, where ball attendees fill cafés and wine bars before and after the ball.
The 2026 edition falls on February 12 — Weiberdonnerstag, and thus the traditional start of the hot final phase of the Rhineland carnival and Mainz Fastnacht campaign. Starting at 8:11 PM (Mainz Elferzeit), the ball begins with the classic hall carnival opening and develops into an intense dance evening throughout the night. The Frankfurter Hof, with its hall format, offers a concentrated, intimate ball atmosphere that makes the experience more intense than in the large Mainz halls.
The exact program and lineup of live bands and DJs for 2026 will be published by the Ranzengarde in January. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: festive reception, welcome by the session president, performance by the Ranzengarde guard, live band with Mainz party music, DJ sets with classics and current hits, dancing late into the night.
Thursday, February 12, 2026 — from 8:11 PM
