Traditional Kerwe in the Palatinate health resort of Ramberg at the foot of the Palatinate Forest, commemorating the brush-maker's craft
The Bürstenbinderkerwe is the traditional village fair (Kirchweih) of the health resort Ramberg in the Palatinate Forest. From July 11 to 14, 2026, the village center will transform into a Palatinate festival ground with catering, live music, and four days of Kerwe atmosphere. The name commemorates the old brush-maker's craft, which was an important source of income in Ramberg and the surrounding Palatinate Forest villages until the 20th century.
Ramberg is located in the heart of the Wasgau region, surrounded by wooded mountain ridges and nearby sandstone rocks. The village is an official health resort and a stop for many hikers on the Pfälzer Höhenwanderweg (Palatinate Ridge Trail). The Bürstenbinderkerwe is a fixed date in the regional festival calendar and attracts visitors from the entire Trifelsland and the Southern Palatinate.
Until the mid-20th century, brush-making was a typical home-based craft in the Palatinate Forest. During the winters, when forestry and agricultural work ceased, families in the Wasgau villages made brushes from bristles, wood, and wire, which were sold by peddlers in the summer. Ramberg was one of the centers of this craft. The Kerwe name keeps the memory of this tradition alive.
The Bürstenbinderkerwe follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe (Kirchweih) program: keg tapping on Friday, dance evening on Saturday, morning pint with brass music on Sunday, and the Kerwe winding down on Monday. A festival tent, drinks stands, a stage, and food stalls characterize the village center. Palatinate specialties – Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen – complement the gastronomic offerings, while draft beer and wine from Palatinate vintners flow at the stands.
In the evenings, live bands, cover groups, and DJs create the atmosphere. The program is tailored to the Palatinate Kerwe audience – Schlager, Palatinate dialect pop, rock covers, party music. Sunday and Monday feature family programs and the traditional Kerwe burial at the end of the festival.
Ramberg is an official health resort located in the heart of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. Hiking trails lead to Meistersel Castle, Eyersberg, Rehbergturm, and the Trifelsland region around Annweiler. Visitors to the Bürstenbinderkerwe often combine the festival weekend with a hike in the Palatinate Forest or a visit to the nearby Imperial Castle Trifels.
