Open-air concert series in front of the Porta Nigra with three ticketed evenings and one free picnic concert
Porta³ was established as a permanent concert series after several predecessor formats and uses the forecourt of the Porta Nigra, arguably Trier's most iconic open-air backdrop. The ancient city gate, erected around 170 AD, serves as a monumental stage background and gives the festival its unmistakable visual character.
The structure has been proven over the years: three evenings feature ticketed headliners from various genres, while the final evening is traditionally a free classical concert by the Philharmonisches Orchester Trier, funded by the City of Trier to strengthen cultural cohesion and World Heritage education. This mix of commercial pop acts, niche formats, and a free community concert makes Porta³ an unusual hybrid in the German festival landscape.
Tickets for the commercial evenings are available through Eventim and Popp Concerts. Capacity on the Porta Nigra square is limited; top acts, in particular, regularly sell out. The free closing concert attracts several thousand Trier residents and guests from the region each year, who bring picnic blankets and folding chairs.
Porta³ 2026 marks a premiere with the performance of MEUTE on June 18: for the first time, the Hamburg-based techno marching band, known for their brass arrangements of electronic classics, will perform in front of the Roman city gate. On June 19, Christian Steiffen follows with his characteristic schlager program “Ich komme”. On June 20, the renowned trumpeter and composer Till Brönner presents a concert bridging jazz, pop, and classical music. The traditional free picnic concert by the Philharmonisches Orchester Trier concludes the series on June 21.
