Grand carnival parade through Pirmasens city centre with a party on the Exerzierplatz
Pirmasens, once the centre of the German shoe industry, is now an important administrative and cultural hub in the Westpfalz. The annual carnival parade has been one of the city's major public attractions for decades and is jointly organised by the City of Pirmasens, the 1. Carneval-Verein Pirmasens (CVP), and other carnival clubs. With its date at the beginning of February 2026, it marks the start of the busy carnival season in the region.
Precisely at 1:11 PM – the jester's carnival start time – the parade will set off down Hauptstraße. Floats with political, satirical, and imaginative themes, walking groups in elaborate costumes, regional brass bands, dance troupes, Funkenmariechen, and Guggenmusik bands from the southwestern German region will form the long procession. Sweets and 'Kamellebeutel' (bags of sweets) will be thrown into the crowd, with families with children particularly populating the pavements.
Hauptstraße will be closed to through traffic from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The route follows Pirmasens' city centre along Hauptstraße and leads to the Exerzierplatz, which becomes the festival grounds for the afternoon and evening.
Immediately after the parade, the big carnival party begins on the Exerzierplatz. A DJ stage, show acts, a fire spectacle, and numerous catering stands ensure an atmosphere that lasts late into the evening. Local carnival hits, current pop songs, and party music will be played, and clubs will serve mulled wine, beer, sparkling wine, and Palatinate wine.
One week after the parade, on February 7, 2026, the 1. Carneval-Verein Pirmasens (CVP) will host its grand gala session in the Festhalle Pirmasens – another highlight of the Pirmasens carnival season. The two events are closely coordinated and promoted together.
The date of February 1, 2026, falls on the last Sunday of the January-February transition, thus marking the traditional early start of the Pirmasens carnival season. This places the parade well before the classic Carnival Sunday (February 15, 2026), securing Pirmasens a special spot on the regional calendar – revellers from the Westpfalz and Saarland often use this date to kick off their own season.
The exact 2026 programme, including the route, list of parade entries, and programme items on the Exerzierplatz, will be published by the City of Pirmasens and the parade committee via umzug-ps.de.
