Westmünsterland on a Spring Evening
Vreden, with just under 23,000 inhabitants, is located on the western edge of the Münsterland region, right on the Dutch border. This small town belongs to the Borken district in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The town is home to the regionally significant museum centre kult Westmünsterland — a cultural, historical, and natural history centre opened in 2017, which complements the collegiate church district with modern architecture. It is precisely here, in front of the late Gothic collegiate church and the Baroque parish church of St. Georg, that the Picknick am kult takes place at the end of May.
A Format with Atmosphere
The concept is simple and compelling: spread out your blankets, bring your picnic basket or buy burgers and snacks on-site, enjoy wine or beer from the stands, and listen to music under the open sky. The evening is organised by kult Westmünsterland, the City of Vreden, and the Vreden City Marketing department, with support from the Sparkassenstiftung Vreden. Admission is free — a deliberate decision to make the concert accessible to all residents of Vreden and visitors.
Acoustic Prelude, Pink Tribute to Conclude
The music programme is carefully curated. It annually kicks off with an acoustic trio or duo that sensitively reinterprets well-known hits with piano, guitar, and vocals. The main act late in the evening is a tribute or cover band from the Lower Rhine-Westmünsterland music scene — in 2026, it will be It's all P!NK – the original P!NK Tribute, featuring charismatic singer Vanessa Henning, who brings the rock anthems of American singer P!NK to the open-air stage. Pop energy against a medieval church backdrop — this very mix defines the format.
More Than Just a Concert
In parallel with the music programme, the exhibitions at the kult Museum are open: the permanent exhibitions on Westmünsterland history and the special exhibition Game on – from the Game Board to the Pixel World. Both churches are open for guided tours within a narrow time window — the collegiate church from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM, and the parish church of St. Georg from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Those interested can combine culture, history, and a concert in one evening.
Westmünsterland Serenity
The Westmünsterland region is characterised by vast meadows, farms, and the typical Münsterland park landscape with tree-lined avenues — the Münsterländer Tönniesnetze. Vreden is small but culturally active: with its cross-border location to the Netherlands, the museum centre, and active city marketing, the town has developed into a hidden gem beyond the well-known Münsterland routes. The Picknick am kult is a piece of this identity — relaxed, cultural, and freely accessible.
