Nearly 50 years of Pentecost tradition at the Bergblick mountain hut on Dolmar
Neubrunn is a small municipality in the administrative district of Dolmar-Salzbrücke in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. Above the village rises the 'Häuschen Bergblick' — a mountain hut in the Dolmar area, established as a hiking and excursion destination in the region. It is here that the Naturfreunde Bergblick celebrate their Pfingstfest at the mountain hut every Pentecost. The tradition dates back nearly 50 years — a consistency that has become a firm part of the Pentecost weekend for many citizens of the region.
The Häuschen Bergblick owes its name to its view: from the plateau, one looks far over the hilly landscape near Dolmar — a prominent elevation south of the Thuringian Forest, which offers extensive views with its approximately 740 meters above sea level. In clear weather, one can see as far as the Rhön and the hills of the Grabfeld. Its location makes the mountain hut meeting point a perfect destination for Pentecost hikes.
Those who visit the Pfingstfest experience not a touristy-commercial event, but a genuine community festival. The Naturfreunde Bergblick organize the festival themselves — the members handle the catering, and the work is voluntary. This structure ensures a very family-like atmosphere: people meet, chat, and sit at long tables. A large proportion of the guests come from the surrounding villages of Neubrunn, Schwarza, Wölfershausen, Christes — many hike up from their villages.
The catering is traditionally Thuringian: Bratwurst (grilled sausage), Roster (sausage), draft beer, Bauernbrot (farmer's bread), Brotzeit (snack), and coffee with homemade cake. In case of bad weather, a large marquee is available — this precaution makes the festival a 'weather-independent' Pentecost option for the region.
In South Thuringia, Pentecost is traditionally an important festival day with hikes, village festivals, and mountain hut excursions. The Pfingstfest at the Häuschen Bergblick fits into this tradition and complements it with its community structure — a model practiced by many small towns in the South Thuringian low mountain ranges, shaping the regional festival culture.
On the Häuschen Bergblick above Neubrunn, residents and hikers from the region gather on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2026, for the traditional Pfingstfest. The Naturfreunde Bergblick have been organizing the festival voluntarily for decades.
Traditional Thuringian catering — Bratwurst, Roster, draft beer, Bauernbrot, and homemade cake — will be available for guests throughout the day. Live music and convivial table rounds in the mountain hut and on the meadow in front form the program framework. In case of bad weather, everything moves into the large marquee.
