Pfingstbier – A Distinct Northern German Festival

The Pfingstbier is a festival tradition cherished in the Schaumburger Land and the surrounding regions of Lower Saxony. Unlike the classic Schützenfest (marksmen's festival), the Pfingstbier does not pursue a martial tradition; it is purely a village festival that has evolved from old Pentecost customs and has shaped the Pentecost weekend in Auhagen for generations. The name derives from the traditional Pfingstbier (Pentecost beer) that was once brewed and distributed for the Pentecost festival.

Festival Days and Programme Structure

The festival weekend begins on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026, with the children's programme at 2:30 PM. Games, competitions, a carousel, and music are aimed at the youngest festival visitors. On Sunday, May 24th, 2026, the traditional reception of local associations by the festival host begins at 1 PM. This gesture of appreciation towards the associations that sustain village life is a central element of the festival. At 2 PM, the grand parade sets off through the village – the visual highlight of the weekend.

The Festival Hosts as Bearers

In Auhagen's Pfingstbier, the festival hosts play a central role. Every year, festival hosts are appointed who organise the festival, receive the associations, and are responsible for the festival operations. This tradition gives the festival a personal touch and ensures continuity with changing stewardship.

Auhagen by the Steinhuder Meer

Auhagen is located not far from the Steinhuder Meer, the largest lake in Lower Saxony. The Pentecost weekend invites not only a visit to the festival but also excursions into a particularly scenic region. Hikers, cyclists, and water sports enthusiasts often combine the Pfingstbier with a day of recreation at the Steinhuder Meer.
