Advent market with gingerbread, mulled wine, and crafts in the Westerwald castle town
When the Pfefferkuchenmarkt in Westerburg opens its gates on the first Advent weekend, the most wonderful time of the year begins for many families from the Westerwald district. The Westerburg Business Association has organized the market for years with great volunteer commitment, making it one of the most popular Advent meeting points in the municipality. The lovingly decorated town center around the castle and market square provides the perfect backdrop for a contemplative stroll through festively decorated stalls.
The star of the show is the namesake Pfefferkuchen (gingerbread) in all its variations – from classic Lebkuchen to glazed specialties and artfully decorated home-baked goods. Mulled wine, punch, and hot apple cider scent the market square, while bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, and waffles cater to culinary desires. Regional vendors from the Westerwald present honey, jams, liqueurs, and winter bread varieties. Artisans display handmade Advent decorations, candles, ceramics, and wood crafts, perfect as small gifts.
The Pfefferkuchenmarkt aims to be a meeting place for all generations. Children can look forward to a visit from St. Nicholas, craft activities, Christmas story times, and small surprises at the club stalls. Posaunen choirs, children's choirs, and local clubs accompany the two market days with Advent songs and festive brass music. The Business Association emphasizes a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere focused on shared enjoyment.
The market is supported by Westerburg's merchants, clubs, and volunteers, who contribute to its success with their own stalls, specialties, and activities. The Pfefferkuchenmarkt is therefore not just a shopping event, but an expression of a vibrant community that cherishes local identity and living tradition.
The 2026 edition coincides with the 1st Advent weekend, offering the classic start to the pre-Christmas season. The town center is festively decorated with wooden stalls, fir branches, and fairy lights, seamlessly integrating the market into Westerburg's historic setting.
In addition to the traditional Pfefferkuchen, guests can expect a wide range of regional specialties, from mulled wine and bratwurst to potato pancakes and waffles. Artisans present handmade gift ideas for the Advent season.
