Traditional festival at the listed monument mill ensemble — May 24th and 25th, 2026
The Howiek Watermill in the Ocholt-Howiek district of Westerstede is one of the most important technical history monuments in Ammerland. The Heimatverein Ocholt-Howiek preserves the building ensemble and makes it regularly accessible to the public. Pentecost is traditionally the big family festival of the year.
The 2026 edition falls on Pentecost Sunday, May 24th, and Pentecost Monday, May 25th. As in previous years, a two-day program will be offered, showcasing the mill in action: Visitors can see the water wheel working, try freshly baked mill bread from the stone oven, and enjoy brass concerts by regional trombone choirs.
The festival combines customs with family gastronomy: coffee and cake in the afternoon, Low German sounds, mill tours for adults and children, plus small stalls from regional vendors. The Howiek Watermill is surrounded by meadows and a mill pond — the atmosphere is calm, rural, and idyllic.
Ammerland has an unusually high concentration of historic water and windmills. The Pentecost festival in Howiek, together with German Mill Day on Pentecost Monday, forms a fixed double date for mill enthusiasts from the entire region.
The program follows the proven cornerstones of the traditional Pentecost festival:
Detailed daily schedule will be communicated by the Heimatverein in advance.
The Howiek Watermill is located in the Ocholt-Howiek district of Westerstede. Accessible via the A 28 (Westerstede exit) and signage near the district roads. Parking available on surrounding meadows.
Free admission, donations for the Heimatverein welcome.
If you're planning the whole Pentecost weekend: the festival in Howiek on Sunday, and German Mill Day with more Ammerland mills on Monday.
