The largest historical folk and marksmen's festival in Northern Germany on the first weekend of July
The Peiner Freischießen dates back to the late Middle Ages and is an expression of an unbroken marksmen's tradition that is still actively maintained in Peine today. Unlike a single marksmen's club, seven equally represented corporations are responsible for the festival, each with its own marquees, traditions, and royal courts. This diversity makes the Freischießen unique and ensures a festival week that is unparalleled in this form in Lower Saxony.
The Junggesellschaft (young society), Bürgercorps (citizens' corps), and other corporations maintain their own traditions, uniforms, and festival schedules. During the festival week, each corporation hosts its own marquee with its own program, catering, and royal court. Visitors can move between the marquees and experience different atmospheres.
Unmistakable highlights of the Freischießen include the grand fireworks display on Friday evening and the traditional King's procession on Monday evening, where the newly proclaimed monarchs are led in a ceremonial procession to the Schützenplatz under torchlight. Both spectacles attract thousands of spectators and are considered the emotional heart of the festival week.
Sunday afternoon is dedicated to the grand parade through the city. All corporations, friendly clubs, music bands, and drum corps march together through the center of Peine. The parade is a colorful showcase of marksmen's culture and is watched by tens of thousands of people along the route.
In addition to the marksmen's program, the Freischießen offers an extensive amusement park with rides, carousels, food stalls, and booths for the whole family. The awarding of the "Grünes Band" (Green Ribbon) by the mayor, concerts for seniors, musical honors, and colorful parades on Tuesday round off the program and make the Freischießen a celebration for all generations.
From Friday to Tuesday, the marksmen's companies, the citizens of the city, and tens of thousands of visitors are kept busy by a packed program. Festival marquees, the amusement park, parades, and ceremonial events alternate. Even those without a direct connection to the marksmen's tradition will find something for themselves, whether it's a concert, a carousel ride, or culinary delights.
Each corporation has its own royal court, which is particularly in focus during the festival week. The proclamation of the new monarchs on Monday, followed by the torchlight King's procession at 10 p.m., is one of the most emotional moments of the festival.
