End of Summer in Papenburg

The Papenburg August Market is the traditional late summer fair (Kirmes) in the town of Papenburg and one of the three major folk festival (Volksfest) dates in the Papenburg calendar — alongside the May Market (Spring) and the Christmas Market (Advent). Organized by the town of Papenburg on the central Untenender Marktplatz, it offers five days of fun at the end of the summer holidays.

Classic Fairground with All the Trimmings

The August Market relies on the tried-and-tested fairground concept with a mix of traditional attractions and more modern ones:

• Carousels: Children's carousels, carousel, classic round carousel
• Rides: Dodgems, round rides, family coaster
• Games: Shooting galleries, lotteries, throwing games, games of chance
• Food Stalls: Bratwurst, fries, crêpes, candied almonds, gingerbread hearts
• Drink Stalls: Beer, soft drinks, cocktails

Daily from 2 PM to 11 PM

With opening hours from 2 PM to 11 PM, the August Market is traditionally oriented towards the afternoon and evening. The hours allow families a relaxed afternoon with the children, teenagers meet up in the early evening, and adults enjoy the evening hours with beer and bratwurst.

Late Summer Atmosphere

The August Market has its own special atmosphere: The days are still long, but already a bit cooler; summer is coming to an end, school is about to start — and the market provides a final big, cheerful accent before autumn. This late summer mood gives the festival its special charm.

Untenender Marktplatz — The Usual Venue

Like the May Market, the August Market is held on the central Untenender Marktplatz — Papenburg's classic festival site. Its location in the town center and proximity to the main canal make visiting particularly attractive: Before or after the fair, you can stroll through Papenburg's town center, walk along the main canal, or stop by one of the many cafés and restaurants.
