37th edition of the traditional Winzerkerwe in the Obere Gasse of Edenkoben — winegrowers' courtyards, barns, and wine presses
The Owwergässer Winzerkerwe is one of the most traditional wine festivals along the Südliche Weinstraße. The 37th edition runs from June 4th to 7th, 2026, in the “Owwergass” – the Obere Gasse (Upper Alley) of Edenkoben. Winegrowers' courtyards, barns, and wine presses along the alley open their doors, serving wine and Palatinate specialties.
Thursday kicks off with a ceremonial opening featuring the Büttel (town crier), the Kuckucksmusikanten Roschbach, and the Knabenkapelle Dinkelsbühl – a guest performance from Edenkoben's Bavarian twin town. Friday and Saturday are dominated by live music and festivities, while on Sunday morning, an ecumenical service takes place at 10 am. The Edenkoben Business Association organizes the event together with the winegrowers of the Owwergass.
“Owwergass” is Palatinate dialect for “Obere Gasse” (Upper Alley) and refers to a historic part of Edenkoben's old town with concentrated winegrowers' courtyards. Here, courtyards, barns, and wine presses line a narrow alley – a microcosm of Palatinate winegrowing tradition, which transforms into an open festival scene during the Winzerkerwe. The residents and winegrowers of the alley organize the event themselves, combining wine, commerce, and conviviality into an urban wine festival with a village character.
On Thursday, June 4th, 2026, the Kerwe opens with a ceremonial ceremony. The Büttel calls for the opening with a traditional gesture, the Kuckucksmusikanten Roschbach play Palatinate brass music, and the Knabenkapelle Dinkelsbühl – the youth band from Edenkoben's Bavarian twin town – participates with a guest performance. This town twinning between Edenkoben and Dinkelsbühl has been nurtured for years and is kept alive through reciprocal visits at festivals.
What distinguishes the Owwergässer Winzerkerwe from other wine festivals is the variety of historic spaces that are opened. Winegrowers' courtyards with their large gate entrances, old barns with wooden beam ceilings, wine presses with traditional pressing technology – the Owwergass offers a structural depth rarely found elsewhere. Each courtyard designs its own presentation: wine service, snacks, seating areas, small stages, or DJ sets.
Friday and Saturday are dominated by live music and festivities. Palatinate cover bands, acoustic duos, and DJs play in the courtyards and on the stages. On Sunday, June 7th, 2026, at 10 am, the traditional ecumenical service takes place – a festival element that underscores the history of the Owwergässer Winzerkerwe as a community neighborhood festival.
