Ovelgönner Pferdemarkt — almost 390 years of Volksfest history

The Ovelgönner Pferdemarkt is the largest and oldest Volksfest in the Wesermarsch. With its 393 years of history, it is one of the most traditional markets in Northwest Germany. Originally founded as a livestock and trading market for horses, the market has evolved over the centuries into a huge Volksfest with showmen, rides, and a flea market — while retaining the memory of its original function in its name.

393rd Edition — an Institution

With its 393rd edition in 2026, the market underscores its special status in the region's festival calendar. Generations of families from Ovelgönne, Brake, Stadland, Butjadingen, and the entire Wesermarsch have grown up with the Pferdemarkt — it is identity, home, and social highlight all at once.

Date on the First Monday in September

The market traditionally takes place on the first Monday in September and the surrounding days. In 2026, the first Monday falls on September 7th, so the market will be held from Saturday, September 5th to Monday, September 7th, 2026. Three days of market activity in the town center of Ovelgönne attract tens of thousands of visitors.

Showmen, Rides, and Flea Market

With 160 showmen, the Pferdemarkt is one of the largest showmen's markets in Lower Saxony. The offerings range from the Ferris wheel and bumper cars to chain swings, children's carousels, and a log flume, as well as game stalls, candy stands, and snack vendors. The large flea market stretches across several streets and offers space for thousands of private and commercial dealers.

Festival Tent and Sociable Atmosphere

A large festival tent with catering, live music, and a dance evening forms the social center of the event. Various bands and Schlager artists provide the musical program. For the older generation, the afternoon and early evening hours are a meeting point, while the younger generations take over the dance floor in the evenings.

Admission to the Pferdemarkt is free. Rides, food, and drinks are paid for directly at the stands. With this policy, the municipality of Ovelgönne keeps the market accessible for every family.
