Three productions and several special concerts between May and November at one of Lower Saxony's most traditional open-air stages
The Osterwaldbühne Salzhemmendorf was founded in 1953, making it one of the oldest open-air stages in Lower Saxony. It is located in the Osterwald forest above the Salzhemmendorf district, nestled in a natural hollow used as an amphitheater. Tiered wooden benches, a permanently installed stage, professional lighting and sound technology, and a dedicated team of actors, directors, set designers, and helpers support the stage. The stage is managed by the Osterwaldbühne e.V. association, which has been working on a voluntary basis for decades.
The 2026 season opens on May 30 with The Wizard of Oz. The stage adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic is aimed at families with children aged approximately 6 and up. Dorothy, her dog Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion embark on a journey to the Emerald City. Live music, costumes, lighting effects, and the natural forest backdrop make the performance a special experience. Several performances are scheduled throughout the season.
From July 17, 2026, the thriller Passenger 23, based on the novel of the same name by Sebastian Fitzek, will be on the program. The story of disappearances, conspiracy, and ship mysteries aboard a cruise ship is presented in an adaptation specially developed for the stage. Atmospheric lighting, oppressive soundscapes, and intense acting performances make the evening a captivating crime experience under the open sky.
From November 6, the stage will present the comedy Mrs. Müller Must Go by Lutz Hübner. Four parents want to get rid of the unpopular class teacher — and things escalate. A satirical look at helicopter parents, school, and the class community, which makes the audience laugh and reflect. A later date than usual — the stage can be used even in November with patio heaters and blanket service.
Three concert evenings complement the program in June: Friday, June 19: My Way with Friedrich Rau, an intimate song evening by the German-speaking singer-songwriter. Saturday, June 20: Schlager Revue with German classics from several decades. Sunday, June 21: Dancing Queen — Tribute concert in honor of ABBA with all the major hits.
The box office opens 60 minutes before the start of the performance. Weatherproof clothing is recommended — performances are held in the open air; only in extreme weather can a performance be canceled or postponed. Blankets, seat cushions, and hot drinks can be purchased on-site or brought along.
Exact performance dates, showtimes, and cast details will be continuously updated on osterwaldbuehne.de and at ticket outlets.
Three productions cover the spectrum from family entertainment to thrillers and comedies; the three concert evenings in June bring different musical worlds to the stage.
