Certified organic winemakers from Rheinhessen and all over Germany at Schillerplatz
Organic viticulture has evolved from a niche movement to a growing segment of the German wine industry over the past decades. ECOVIN, founded in 1985, is the oldest and largest association of German organic winemakers, representing several hundred member businesses in all German growing regions today. Its headquarters have long been in Mainz, the German wine capital, and the Organic Wine Festival at Schillerplatz is one of the formats through which the association promotes direct contact between organic winemakers and consumers in the city center.
The first edition in 2025 established the format: an evening wine festival in the summer heat, presenting the diversity of German organic viticulture in a condensed form. The second edition in 2026 continues this concept. The participating wineries primarily come from Rheinhessen, the immediate surroundings of Mainz and Germany's largest wine-growing region, supplemented by wineries from Pfalz, Rheingau, Mosel, Nahe, Baden, Württemberg, Franken, and other regions. All wineries are ECOVIN or otherwise organically certified and work according to the strict guidelines of organic viticulture: no chemical-synthetic pesticides, no mineral nitrogen fertilizers, promotion of biodiversity in the vineyard, gentle processing in the cellar.
The atmosphere at Schillerplatz has a special character. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, the Fastnachtsbrunnen (Carnival Fountain) stands in its center, and the stalls are arranged in a circular layout. Guests stroll with their glasses from stall to stall, talk directly with the winemakers, compare styles and vintages, and let themselves be guided by recommendations. The selection ranges from dry Rieslings to Burgundy cuvées, from light Rosés to full-bodied red wines, from classic methods to modern skin-fermented and orange wines. Small snacks complement the offerings, allowing the wines to be tasted in a relaxed setting.
For Mainz's wine scene, the Organic Wine Festival is a valuable addition. It emphasizes the ecological aspect of the modern wine industry, creates encounters between the city's public and producers, and uses one of the city's most beautiful squares for a focused, curated format. Schillerplatz is already a meeting point for Mainz's wine life – the Herbstfest (Autumn Festival) and several other wine events also take place here – and the Organic Wine Festival fits into this tradition with a clear thematic profile.
The second edition of the Organic Wine Festival builds on the success of the premiere in 2025. The format focuses on a Thursday evening in July, utilizing the after-work vibe of Mainz's city center for a concentrated wine presentation. From 6 PM, the stalls open, and the first guests arrive directly from the city's offices. Throughout the evening, the square fills with wine lovers, restaurateurs, sommeliers, and a broad city audience. The atmosphere remains lively until the late evening hours, with conversations between winemakers and guests, comparisons between styles, and a relaxed summer mood by the Fastnachtsbrunnen.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the ECOVIN association in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: a central tasting area, specialty and snack stalls, short winemaker presentations, and a curated wine selection with a focus on Rheinhessen and expansion to all German growing regions.
