The Open-Air Cinema in the Castle Courtyard is one of Oldenburg's most atmospheric film events. During the ten days of Kultursommer, the courtyard of the historic castle transforms into an open-air cinema every evening — with a large screen, rows of seats, and the unmistakable atmosphere of a mild summer evening in a historic setting.
Castle Courtyard as a Film Set
The courtyard of Oldenburg Castle is enclosed on all sides, offering an intimate, slightly secluded atmosphere. The historic architecture is particularly impressive in the twilight, and the acoustics are surprisingly good.
International Program
The 2026 program focuses on a mix of current international feature films and selected highlights. Confirmed titles include:
- Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning: the final installment of the Tom Cruise film series
- Conclave: a drama about the papal election with a top-class cast
- Maria: a biopic about Maria Callas
- Further titles in the published program
As Part of Kultursommer
The Open-Air Cinema is part of the larger Kultursommer program, which will take place on several central city squares from July 10 to 19, 2026. Combining a concert visit on Schlossplatz with a film evening in the courtyard allows you to experience the festival in its full breadth.
Tickets from €39
Tickets are sold via Reservix, starting at approximately €39. Seats are often booked quickly — early booking is recommended, especially for popular titles.
Atmosphere
The screening begins at dusk. Audiences often bring picnics and blankets; catering is available on-site. The combination of the castle backdrop, starry sky, and cinema experience makes every evening a summer highlight.
