Spring drive with over 120 historic commercial vehicles from Leer through East Frisia
What began as a gathering of a small group of enthusiastic truck collectors has developed into a major event with a significant tourist impact. The spring drive, starting in Leer, regularly brings together over 120 historic trucks of all makes and years — from post-war economic miracle classics to heavy tractor-trailers from the 1970s and 1980s. Many vehicles are elaborately restored and travel in the original paintwork of East Frisian and North German freight forwarders.
After assembling in Leer, the convoy rolls through the landscape of southern and central East Frisia. Depending on the year, the route leads via federal and country roads to Aurich or other destinations. The event is organized spontaneously and driven by participants, but reliably returns every April. Town entrances are traditionally accompanied by families, clubs, and fire brigades as small folk festivals (Volksfest) along the roadside.
For many participants, the convoy marks the season opener for the historic commercial vehicle year. Between the vehicles, restorations are compared, spare parts are exchanged, and stories are told. At the same time, the drive is a tribute to the importance of transport and freight forwarding for the economic development of East Frisia. Those living or traveling along the route should expect delays — and take in the sight of the long column of historic vehicles.
Unlike fixed gatherings, this is a purely rolling event with no commercial stands, no admission fee, and no registration required for spectators. Anyone who wants to be there can find a spot along the published route.
The 2026 edition follows the proven pattern: assembly point in Leer in the morning, joint formation, followed by a multi-hour drive through East Frisian towns and along federal and country roads towards Aurich. The exact route will be communicated at short notice. Spectators can best experience the event at typical bottlenecks or town centers along the route.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizing committee in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Sunday, April 19, 2026.
Assembly in Leer (East Frisia), followed by rolling through East Frisia, presumably to Aurich. Detailed route information will be announced at short notice via local media and social media.
Active participation only with a historic commercial vehicle, subject to the organizers' agreement. No registration or admission fee for roadside spectators.
Delays and short-term traffic disruptions are to be expected along the convoy routes.
