Local artists open their studios and workshops in the cultural city of Unkel am Rhein
Unkel has an unusually dense art and culture scene for its size. Even in the 20th century, the town – on the right bank of the Rhine between Königswinter and Linz – was a meeting place for writers, politicians, and artists. Konrad Adenauer and Willy Brandt spent parts of their lives here; artists from the Cologne-Bonn region found a retreat in the quiet town. The "Kulturstadt Unkel" initiative makes this heritage publicly accessible today.
The concept is simple and effective: On a fixed weekend, artists open their studios and workshops – often in residential buildings, backyards, former barns, or workshops – to the public. Those who visit the studio weekend receive a leaflet with addresses, opening hours, and disciplines and can put together their own tour. Direct sales, commission acceptance, and personal conversations are possible.
Typical for Unkel is the wide range: oil painting, watercolor, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry, textiles, photography, bookbinding, furniture design, glass art, and occasionally conceptual art. Some studios are not publicly accessible all year round – the weekend is the only opportunity to peek behind the workshop doors.
The Offene Ateliers can be ideally combined with a stroll through the historic old town, a visit to the Rhine promenade, and a stop at a restaurant or café. A whole "Kultur-Tour Unkel" can be planned in an afternoon over a weekend.
Kulturstadt Unkel coordinates the event. A leaflet with studio addresses, disciplines, and opening hours will be provided in advance, allowing visitors to plan their own tour.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by Kulturstadt Unkel in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Free admission. Works by individual artists are sold on-site at artist prices.
May 2nd-3rd, 2026. Exact opening hours of individual studios will be published in advance by Kulturstadt Unkel.
