Traditional village Kerwe in the Southern Palatinate wine community of Oberhausen on the last weekend of August
The Oberhausen Kerwe is the traditional village Kerwe of the Southern Palatinate wine community of Oberhausen. From August 29th to 31st, 2026, the festival grounds of the Bergzabern region town will be transformed into a Palatinate festival site with catering, live music, and three days of Kerwe atmosphere. The local clubs jointly organize the event, continuing the tradition of the Southern Palatinate village Kerwe.
Oberhausen (postal code 76887) is a small municipality in the Verbandsgemeinde Bad Bergzabern, on the edge of the Bergzabern region. Its location between vineyards and the Bienwald forest makes it a typical Palatinate wine community in the southernmost tip of the Palatinate. The Kerwe at the end of August is the social highlight of the year and a meeting point for citizens and visitors from the Bergzabern region.
The Oberhausen Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe choreography: barrel tapping on Friday, dance evening on Saturday, morning pint with brass music on Sunday. A festival tent, drinks stands, a stage, and food stalls characterize the festival grounds. Palatinate specialties – Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen – complement the gastronomic offerings. Draft beer and wine from Southern Palatinate vintners flow at the beverage stands.
In the evenings, live bands, DJs, and Palatinate dialect groups provide the atmosphere. The Kerwe is a meeting point for the citizens of Oberhausen and visitors from the neighboring towns of Bad Bergzabern, Pleisweiler-Oberhofen, Klingenmünster, and the southern Bienwald region. The familiar atmosphere of the small town shapes the festival – a typical Palatinate village festival without tourist pressure.
Wine from the vineyards of the Südliche Weinstraße (Southern Palatinate Wine Route) plays a central role. The vintners from Oberhausen and neighboring areas serve Riesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), cuvées, and Rosé. Wine here is not a secondary matter but an integral part of the Kerwe atmosphere and the Palatinate way of life.
Oberhausen is located in the southernmost tip of the Palatinate, nestled between the vineyards of the Südliche Weinstraße and the Bienwald forest. The town belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bad Bergzabern and is connected to the spa town by country roads. Visitors to the Oberhausen Kerwe can combine the weekend with a walk through the Bienwald or a hike in the vineyards.
