Easter Bonfire on the Wadden Sea – a North German Tradition

The Easter Bonfire (Osterfeuer) is a deeply rooted tradition throughout Northern Germany. In Christian interpretation, it symbolizes the resurrection and the overcoming of darkness – but in reality, its tradition reaches back further to pre-Christian spring rituals that celebrated the sun's victory over winter. On the North Sea coast, the custom has been preserved with particular vibrancy: every village, every stretch of beach has its own Easter Bonfire, and Holy Saturday evening is one of the most sociable dates of the spring.

Norddeich's Contribution – on the Open Beach

The Norddeich Easter Bonfire takes place directly on the beach. The pile of wood is erected in the days before Easter, cordoned off by safety barriers. At dusk on Holy Saturday (April 4, 2026), visitors gather on the beach – with a view of the Wadden Sea on one side and the dunes at their backs. The Norddeich fire brigade lights the pile, and within minutes, the flames soar meters high above the sand.
