The NORD OPEN AIR Sommerfest is one of the best insider tips from the Essen underground scene: a free, two-day open-air featuring Rock, Metal, and Alternative bands, right on Viehofer Platz in the middle of Essen's city center. Organized by Cafe Nord, one of the city's established underground bars. The next edition will take place from Friday, August 21 to Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The 2026 Lineup

Saturday Headliner: The Night Eternal

The Night Eternal (Essen) — Heavy Metal with Gothic and dark influences — are the Saturday headliner. Special feature: The festival set is an exclusive hot release show for the new album „COLD VELVET", which will be released worldwide on Metal Blade Records on Saturday, August 21, 2026. The Night Eternal will present their new sound to a home crowd in an exclusive festival format — before the album goes on the European tour schedule.

The Stage Atmosphere at Viehofer Platz

Viehofer Platz is located right on the edge of Essen's city center — a raw, honest, urban stage. Cafe Nord, the main venue, has been a meeting point for Essen's Metal, Rock, and Alternative scene for years. During the festival, the entire square will be used: main stage, sound system, bar, food trucks. Atmosphere: raw, authentic, intense — not a sterile mega-festival, but a genuine scene event.

Free Live Music in Essen

The free event makes the festival special: top-class Metal and Rock acts without tickets, without wristbands. Funding comes from Cafe Nord and sponsors — the bar profits from drink sales, and the bands earn performance fees and sell merchandise. A concept that has become rare in the professionalized festival landscape.

Cafe Nord — Essen's Underground Institution

Cafe Nord is one of Essen's best-known underground bars — a meeting point for Metal fans, Rock enthusiasts, and the Alternative scene. Concerts, DJ nights, and release shows also take place here during the regular season. The Summer Fest is the seasonal highlight — and the occasion when the entire scene becomes visibly present on the street.

With over 580,000 inhabitants, Essen is one of the largest cities in the Ruhr area — and has a vibrant, tough, honest underground scene nestled between industrial ruins and the modern city center. Districts like Altendorf (where IMHA TARIKAT comes from), Rüttenscheid, Nordviertel, Holsterhausen are home to this scene — and Cafe Nord is its unofficial living room.
