About Nieberummer Kerb

The Nieberummer Kerb is the traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Niefernheim district of the municipality of Zellertal in the Donnersbergkreis. In the Palatinate dialect, Niefernheim is pronounced "Nieberum" – this is where the independent festival name Nieberummer Kerb originates. The Kerb traditionally takes place on the last weekend of August, making it one of the early Kerwen in the Zellertal. The venue is the village square of Niefernheim. Palatinate wine from the wineries of the Zellertal, dance evenings, Frühschoppen (morning pint), and the traditional Kerwe parade characterize the program of this small but lively village festival.

The Nieberummer Kerb is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Niefernheim district of the municipality of Zellertal in the Donnersbergkreis. The name "Nieberum" for Niefernheim is the Palatinate dialect form of the place name.

Niefernheim in the Zellertal

Niefernheim is located in the Zellertal on the border with Rheinhessen and, since the municipal reform, belongs to the municipality of Zellertal along with Harxheim and Zell. Despite the common administrative structure, each district maintains its own festival tradition – the Nieberummer Kerb is a good example of this.

Village Square as Festival Venue

The venue for the Kerb is the village square of Niefernheim, which is transformed into a festival area for the weekend with a festival tent or at least with benches, tables, a stage, and a bar. Its central location in the village center makes the festival the social heart of the community.

Program and Customs

As with all Palatinate Kerwen, the program follows the classic pattern: opening on Friday evening, dance or party night on Saturday, Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday morning, Kerwe parade on Sunday afternoon, Kerwerede (Kerb speech) and festival activities. Palatinate wine from the wineries of the Zellertal, hearty specialties, and draft beer characterize the culinary offerings.

Date on the Last Weekend of August

With its date on the last weekend of August, the Nieberummer Kerb is one of the early Kerwen in the Donnersbergkreis. It thus opens, so to speak, the Kerwes season in the Zellertal, which is followed in September by the Haschemer Kerb in Harxheim and other smaller festivals.
