Tradition on the last day of the year – approx. 5.8 km around the Maschsee, with children's runs of 600 m and 1,200 m
New Year's Eve runs are a tradition in many German cities. They use the last day of the year for a communal sporting activity and set the mood for the upcoming festive season. The Hannover New Year's Eve Run at the Maschsee has been established for many years and is considered one of the most atmospheric New Year's Eve runs in Northern Germany.
The main distance is around 5.8 kilometers and leads once completely around the Maschsee. The route is asphalted, largely flat, and easy to run. The start and finish are at the northern shore near the well-known Fackelträger (torchbearer) sculpture, a landmark of the Maschsee shore.
Two children's runs are offered for the youngest participants:
The children's runs take place before the main run and are held as a competition, but in a family setting. All participants receive commemorative medals and certificates.
The New Year's Eve Run is deliberately designed not as a high-performance competition, but as a community run with a festive character. Many participants run in costumes or New Year's Eve outfits; the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Professional runners can still participate and race against the clock.
The Maschsee on the last day of the year offers a unique atmosphere: the short winter days, the low-lying sun, often fog or frost – this creates a special backdrop. After the run, participants and companions meet at the northern shore for a relaxed conclusion, often with hot punch and mulled wine.
As in previous years, registration is possible via silvesterlauf-hannover.de. Late entries on the day of the competition are usually possible with a surcharge, but starting places are limited.
Costumes, New Year's Eve outfits, and creative disguises are a tradition and explicitly welcome. Many participants run in groups or family teams.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in the autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
