Four weeks of Christmas magic on the Freithof Neuss from November 25 to December 23, 2026 — campfire atmosphere in the historic shadow of Quirinusmünster
The Neuss Christmas Market is one of the most atmospheric Advent markets on the left Lower Rhine. For four weeks — from November 25 to December 23, 2026 — it brings together stallholders, caterers, and Christmas fans around the Freithof Neuss: a historic square directly next to the Quirinusmünster (today's Basilica minor, with roots in the 9th century), one of the most important Romanesque churches in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The market deliberately focuses on a campfire atmosphere: you walk among small stalls and shelters, past wood stoves, and can warm yourself at open fire pits. Mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with rum), baked apples, candied almonds, potato pancakes, crêpes, regional sausages — the standard repertoire of a good Rhenish Christmas market in a particularly intimate form. Unlike the mass markets in Cologne or Düsseldorf, the Neuss market remains familiar and manageable.
A special feature of the Neuss Christmas Market: During its run, the traditional Saturday weekly market is moved from Münsterplatz to the Freithof. This means: on Saturdays, you can buy fresh produce from regional farmers, cheese, meat, fish, and baked goods right next to the Christmas stalls — an original juxtaposition that combines everyday life and festive occasions.
On the market, brass quartets, school choirs, and small bands take turns playing Advent melodies. For children, there is a nostalgia carousel, craft activities, and visits from St. Nicholas during the pre-Christmas period. The horse-drawn carriage of the Neuss Schützengilde is a local specialty.
With over 150,000 inhabitants, Neuss is the largest city on the left Lower Rhine and lies directly opposite Düsseldorf on the Rhine. The veneration of Quirinus shapes the city's Catholic self-image. The Quirinusmünster (12th–13th century) on the Freithof is not only a landmark but also the sacred center — the Christmas market in front of its portal uniquely combines the secular Advent festival and the church space. You can reach Neuss from the state capital in ten minutes by Düsseldorf S-Bahn (S11, S8, S28).
The Neuss Christmas Market 2026 will again take place on the historic Freithof Neuss next to the Quirinusmünster. For four weeks, a particularly intimate atmosphere with campfires, small stalls, and Advent music will create an experience away from the mass markets. The highlight: the relocation of the Saturday weekly market from Münsterplatz to the Freithof — so that fresh produce and Christmas decorations can be discovered side by side.
