Altweiberfastnacht in the Palatinate

Altweiberfastnacht (also known as Weiberfastnacht or Wieverfastelovend in some regions) is a distinct and traditional date in the Rhenish and, to some extent, Palatinate carnival calendar. It marks the beginning of the intense carnival days between Thursday and Ash Wednesday. In Kaiserslautern, the Carnival Club 1838 upholds this tradition with its Altweiberfastnacht event at the Kalause, the club's own carnival pub.

The Kalause as a Carnival Location

For years, the Kalause has been the KVK 1838's regular carnival venue, serving as the central meeting point for Kaiserslautern's carnival enthusiasts on days when there isn't a major gala event in the Fruchthalle. With its bar, dance floor, and carnival decorations, the Kalause is perfectly equipped for party formats, offering a relaxed and exuberant counterpart to the more formal galas.

Women Take the Lead

The Altweiberfastnacht format has a historical element: in Rhenish tradition, women symbolically take over power on this day. A classic element is cutting off men's ties – a ritual not as widely practiced here as in the Rhineland, but still observed in parts of the Kaiserslautern carnival scene. Women lead the program, take the microphone, and create the atmosphere. Men are welcome to join the celebration but play a subordinate role on this day.

Party Format and Transition

Unlike the grand galas, which follow a strict stage format, Altweiberfastnacht is a party event. DJ music featuring carnival hits and general party tunes, sing-alongs, bar service, and exuberant carnival spirit characterize the evening. For the KVK 1838, this date marks the start of the intense carnival days, which were already heralded by the Gala Prunksitzung in the Fruchthalle (January 31) and now transition into the high-frequency final phase before Ash Wednesday.
