One of the oldest Kirchweihen (church consecration festivals) in Northern Karlsruhe
Neureut has been a district of Karlsruhe since 1975 — previously an independent municipality in the Karlsruhe district with its own history, identity, and festival traditions. The Neureut Kerwe (Kirchweih) is one of the largest and longest continuously maintained Kirchweih festivals in the northwest of Karlsruhe. Every year on the third weekend in August (Friday to Monday), the festival grounds at Adolf-Ehrmann-Bad transform into a festive strip with amusement rides, a festival tent, around 30 stalls, and a festival stage. The Kerwe is organized by AG Kerwe Neureut — an association of the three major Neureut sports clubs: TG Neureut, FC Germania, and Fortuna Kirchfeld.
Four Days of Festivities with a Clear Structure
The four-day format has a clear structure that every regular visitor knows. Friday is the opening evening: keg tapping from 6 PM, followed by "Oldies Night" with live music from The Moonlights — a band that has been playing at the Kerwe for years and caters to an older regular audience. Saturday is the main concert day and party evening: Die Partyfürsten — a well-known party band — will entertain on the festival stage with current hits and classics, attracting a younger audience in particular. Sunday starts with a church service on the festival grounds, followed by a brunch with the music club, a children's program in the afternoon, and a Coldplay tribute band in the evening. Monday is the most important festival day for the long-established residents of Neureut: the Saurfest concept (featuring characteristically sour food), live music, and fireworks around 10 PM to conclude.
Around 30 Stalls and Amusement Rides
The Adolf-Ehrmann-Bad festival grounds host around 30 stalls — from club-run eateries and festival tents to carousels, shooting galleries, children's rides, crêpe stands, bratwurst stalls, pastry vendors, and smaller amusement rides. It's not a massive Volksfest on the scale of Cannstatter Wasen, but a dense, lively festive area that creates a typical Baden Kirchweih atmosphere. Catering is provided by the club members of AG Kerwe Neureut.
Meeting Point for Young and Old
The Neureut Kerwe describes itself as a "meeting point for young and old; for visitors from near and far" — and it fulfills this function precisely. Monday is traditionally the most important day for the long-established Neureut residents — those who have moved away from the district often return for the Saurfest on Monday. Families make use of Sunday with its children's program, while younger regulars enjoy the Saturday party evening. It serves the social function of an old-school district festival within a large city environment — a format that Karlsruhe actively cultivates in its districts.
