Marksmen Tradition in the Märkisches Sauerland

The Neuenrader Schützenfest is an integral part of those Sauerland summer festivals that no citizen of the small town in the Märkischer Kreis would miss. For three days, from July 24th to 26th, 2026, it shapes the town center — and thus traditionally takes place on the last weekend of July, the fixed date for the Marksmen's Society. The organizer is the local Schützengesellschaft Neuenrade (Marksmen's Society), which hosts the festival in conjunction with the Kreisschützenbund Arnsberg (Arnsberg District Marksmen's Association) (Balve Office).

The Weekend — Schützenfest in Three Acts

A classic Schützenfest follows a strict sequence that has evolved over generations. In Neuenrade, the weekend begins on Friday evening with the Großer Zapfenstreich (Grand Tattoo) and the ceremonial start of the festival on the fairgrounds. Saturday is dedicated to the Königsschießen (king's shooting): the marksmen of the society compete to determine a new king who will lead the club for one year. Sunday is the day of the grand Festumzug (parade): companies, marching bands, and the reigning king and queen march in full uniform through the town, followed by the Schützenball (marksmen's ball) in the Schützenhalle (marksmen's hall).

More Than Just a Shooting Competition

Anyone who understands the festival merely as a Königsschießen misunderstands its social significance. A Schützenfest in the Sauerland is community in its purest form: generations meet, the beer flows, the bands play, the young marksmen learn to march, the older ones reminisce. Once a Schützenkönig (marksmen's king), one permanently belongs to the 'royal family' in Neuenrade — an honor passed down through generations.

Neuenrade — Small Town with Great Tradition

Neuenrade is located in the Märkischer Kreis, about 50 kilometers northeast of Cologne and in the middle of the Sauerland mountain region. Around 11,000 inhabitants live in the town, known for its hillside farms, hiking opportunities, and its marksmen's traditions. The Schützenfest is one of the two major club traditions — alongside Karneval (Carnival) — and shapes public life anew each year.

Integrated into the Sauerland Marksmen's Calendar

The Kreisschützenbund Arnsberg comprises seven offices — Neuenrade belongs to the Amt Balve (Balve Office). Hundreds of similar festivals take place across the state during the summer, each with its own character. This makes Neuenrade not an exception, but the rule: here, what defines the Sauerland culturally becomes visible.
