»The Toughest in the North« — Marathon, Half Marathon and more around the Tollensesee
The Neubrandenburger Tollenseseelauf is one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most traditional running events. Its nickname »The Toughest in the North« says it all: The marathon route completely circles the Tollensesee and demands real endurance with around 350 meters of elevation gain, forest sections, and a hilly profile. Annually, around 2,000 athletes start.
The main distances start from Neubrandenburg's Kurpark. The marathon route leads along the lake shore through the Nemerow Forest, via Klein Nemerow, Usadel, and the Lieps shore to Hohenzieritz — approximately the halfway point — and continues via Prilwitz, Zippelow, and Neu Wustrow to Alt Rehse, before the final ten kilometers lead back to the finish. In addition, there is a half marathon, a marathon relay for teams of four, the 10-kilometer race, a 13-kilometer walking and Nordic walking route through the Broda Forest, as well as children's runs over 400 and 800 meters, and a 2-kilometer Sparkassenlauf for families.
All routes end in the Kulturpark at the Sportgymnasium Neubrandenburg — an atmospheric finish line close to the Tollensesee. The run combines athletic challenge with the scenic beauty of the Mecklenburg Lake District.
At over ten kilometers long, the Tollensesee is one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's largest lakes. Neubrandenburg, the City of Four Gates on the north shore, is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District. Once a year, the Tollenseseelauf turns the lake into a grand running stage.
On June 13, 2026, the starting gun for the 34th Neubrandenburger Tollenseseelauf will fire at 9:00 AM. Around 2,000 runners will circle the Tollensesee on the challenging routes that have earned the race the nickname »The Toughest in the North«.
The start and finish are located in Neubrandenburg's Kurpark and Kulturpark, respectively. The marathon route leads through the Nemerow Forest, via Usadel, Hohenzieritz, and Alt Rehse around the lake, demanding approximately 350 meters of elevation gain.
