Traditional four-day Kirchweih in the Goldkronach district of Nemmersdorf with Kerwabaum and community life
The Nemmersdorfer Kerwa is part of the rich tapestry of Upper Franconian Kirchweih traditions that keep the customs of the rural region alive each year. Nemmersdorf is a district of the town of Goldkronach in the Bayreuth district, located in the foothills of the Fichtelgebirge. With only a few hundred inhabitants, the Kerwa here remains a true village festival – supported by the Kerwagesellschaft (festival society), local clubs, the fire department, and the parish community.
The Kerwa traditionally spans four days – from Friday to Monday. It kicks off with the Kerwaessen (festival meal) in the ASV hall on Friday evening, a communal dinner for the Kerwaleut' (festival organizers) and guests, during which the young Kerwapaare (festival couples) open the weekend. Saturday features the Kerwabaum erection, the beer tapping, and the first dance evening. Sunday is the main festival day with Frühschoppen (morning pint), a festive church service, and dancing. Monday traditionally concludes the Kerwa.
As with many Franconian Kirchweihen, the Kerwabaum and the Kerwapaare play a central role. The young Kerwaleute from the village organize the festival, wear traditional costumes or matching Kerwa shirts, fetch the tree from the forest, erect it in the village square, and finally "dance it down" on Monday. The Kerwabaum symbolizes the village's vitality and the connection between generations.
Culinary delights await guests with Upper Franconian specialties: Schäuferla (pork shoulder with bone), Bratwürste (sausages), Sauerbraten (marinated roast), Knödel (dumplings), Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Franconian Pilsner, and Weissbier. Homemade cakes, coffee in the afternoon, and a hearty breakfast on Sunday round off the program.
Goldkronach, the mother town of Nemmersdorf, is known as the Alexander von Humboldt Town: The great naturalist managed the Prussian mining authorities there in the early 19th century. Goldkronach thrives on this history – the Gold Mining Museum commemorates medieval gold extraction in the Fichtelgebirge. The Nemmersdorfer Kerwa complements these tourist highlights with an authentic, unscripted piece of folk culture.
The 2026 edition runs from August 28th to 31st in the Nemmersdorf district of the town of Goldkronach. Opening on Friday, August 28th at 6:00 PM with the Kerwa opening and Kerwaessen in the ASV hall.
