"Rheinhessen EXCELLENT Wine Festival" in Nackenheim am Rhein, home of Carl Zuckmayer's "The Merry Vineyard"
Nackenheim am Rhein, one of Rheinhessen's most renowned wine-growing villages on the left bank of the Rhine south of Mainz, is inextricably linked with the name Carl Zuckmayer. The writer, born in Nackenheim in 1896, immortalized his homeland in the play "Der fröhliche Weinberg", which premiered in 1925 and has become a classic of German literature, still performed on many German stages today. The play, a sparkling comedy about love, wine, and Rhenish stubbornness, has made Nackenheim famous far beyond the region.
The Nackenheim Wine Festival "In the Merry Vineyard" consciously embraces this literary connection, making it its trademark. From July 24th to 27th, 2026, Nackenheim will celebrate four days of wine festival in the village center. Starting in 2026, the date is permanently set for the last full weekend of July – after years of changing dates, this provides stability and clearly positions the festival within the Rhenish festival calendar.
The festival is among those honored with the "Rheinhessen AUSGEZEICHNETES Weinfest" (Rheinhessen EXCELLENT Wine Festival) award. This distinction, given by the regional tourism and wine association, is awarded to wine festivals of particularly high quality in terms of wine selection, atmosphere, and service – a seal of quality that Nackenheim has held for years.
The focus is on the Nackenheim vintners and their current vintages: Pinot Noir, Riesling – especially from the classified sites on the Roter Hang (Red Slope), which stretches from Nierstein to Nackenheim – Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, Rosé, and Sekt. The Roter Hang is one of Rheinhessen's most famous Riesling locations.
The opening winery tasting will take place on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2026, one week before the festival – a prelude for invited guests that heralds the season. The culinary offerings include Rhenish specialties: Spundekäs (cheese spread), Handkäs mit Musik (marinated cheese with onions), Bratwurst (sausage), steaks, Flammkuchen (flatbread), homemade salads, and, depending on the day, specialities from local clubs. Live music – with various bands, dance bands in the evenings, and acoustic acts in the afternoon – ensures the right atmosphere.
The 2026 edition marks the first regular date after the consolidation to the last full July weekend. Opening winery tasting on Wednesday, July 22nd (one week prior), main festival July 24th to 27th. Four festival days with Nackenheim vintners, Riesling from the Roter Hang, Rhenish cuisine, and live music in the literary setting of Carl Zuckmayer's homeland.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the municipality of Nackenheim in due course. The structure follows the established key points of previous years.
