A Riesling journey through the most famous steep slopes of the Middle Mosel
Mythos Mosel connects about a dozen Mosel wine villages over approximately 15 kilometers into one grand wine event. Over the Pentecost weekend, around 120 wineries open their courtyards, cellars, and wine shops; many present exclusively to a broad audience during this weekend. The range extends from established global brands like Joh. Jos. Prüm, Markus Molitor, Selbach-Oster, Schloss Lieser, or Fritz Haag to smaller family businesses offering tastings in their courtyards.
The route leads through one of the densest concentrations of great German vineyard sites: Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr, Lieserer Niederberg-Helden, Bernkasteler Doctor and Lay, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Himmelreich, Ürziger Würzgarten – the list reads like a textbook of German top Riesling. Those who walk the route also traverse the Mosel's geology: blue slate in Graach and Wehlen, red slate in Ürzig, sandy weathered soils in Brauneberg.
Mythos Mosel is significantly more than a festival with a stand and a glass. The courtyards stage their tastings with atmosphere: street food chefs, visiting Michelin-starred cuisine, jazz bands, DJ sets, sculpture exhibitions, pop-up wine shops in historic vaults. The association "Mythos Mosel" was founded in 2010 by a group of young Mosel vintners who wanted to give the region a contemporary wine festival format – beyond the cliché of Mosel dance floors and local fairs (Kerwe).
Today, Mythos Mosel ranks among Europe's most important wine festivals, attracting visitors from the USA, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Japan, and all of Central Europe. Tickets are strictly limited and usually sell out months in advance. Those who attend combine a long Pentecost weekend with overnight stays in Bernkastel-Kues, Zeltingen, or one of the Mosel villages, working their way through a personal selection of vineyard sites day by day.
