About Music and Word in the Cathedral
The Trier Cathedral, as the oldest bishop's church in Germany and part of the UNESCO World Heritage recognized since 1986, is an extraordinary space for sacred music. Its acoustics carry the sounds of the Schwalbennest organ, the diverse choirs, and ensembles, making it one of the most significant venues for sacred music in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The series “Music and Word in the Cathedral” is an Advent concert series that takes on special significance in the 2026 celebration year — on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Trier's World Heritage designation. It combines church music tradition with the aim of making the World Heritage site a living space of sound.
The series runs from November 28, 2026 (First Saturday of Advent) to December 19, 2026 (Fourth Saturday of Advent). During this period, several concerts are planned with the Dommusik (Cathedral Choir, Girls' Choir of the Cathedral, Cathedral Brass, Cathedral Organist Josef Still), guest choirs, and guest ensembles. The program combines Advent vocal music, instrumental works, organ music, and liturgical readings.
Following the Advent series, the performance of the Christmas Oratorio on December 26 and 27, 2026, is traditionally planned — another musical highlight of Trier Cathedral. The exact dates, programs, and performers will be published by the Dommusik in the autumn.
